    Food allergies in children occur when the immune system reacts abnormally to proteins in food. Common allergens include milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and sesame, although almost any food can potentially cause an allergic reaction.

    Symptoms can affect the skin, digestive system, respiratory system, and circulation. Some reactions remain mild, while others develop into potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis.

    Accurate diagnosis is essential. Skin prick tests and specific IgE blood tests can support a diagnosis, but a positive test alone does not prove that a child has a clinical food allergy. In selected cases, a medically supervised oral food challenge provides the clearest answer.

    Management usually involves avoiding confirmed allergens, maintaining good nutrition, understanding food labels and cross-contact, and ensuring that schools and other caregivers have an appropriate emergency plan.

    For children at risk of anaphylaxis, epinephrine is the first-line emergency treatment. Antihistamines may help certain mild symptoms but must not replace epinephrine when anaphylaxis is suspected.
